Muse of Fire: The Ceramic Figure 2006

Sept. 9th - 29th

Reception: Saturday Sept. 9th 6 - 9 pm

Our innate emotional and intellectual responses make the human figure the most powerful form in art. The figure is the most direct means by which artists address issues of humanity, ideas about ourselves as individuals, and views on our culture. Muse of Fire: The Ceramic Figure features 11 contemporary ceramic artists. From R. Bruce Flowers' reflections on same-sex relationships to Kyle and Kelly Phelps' musings on racial conflict, we see in clay the vexing issues of the day. Artists Liz Bryant, Marie Gibbons, Paul Andrew Wandless, and Dana Groemminger use the human form as a canvas for the expression of inner life, turmoil, and often unseen facets of the mind. The work of Tom Bartel, Gregg Jabs, Katy Rush, and Matt Shaffer explore sexuality, identity, mortality and the impermanence of life.
