Functional Earthenware Invitational 2005

Oct. 8th - Nov. 12th, 2005

A special invitational exhibit focusing solely on functional earthenware objects opens in the Charlie Cummings Clay Studio gallery this October. The exhibit features work from both renowned and emerging ceramic artists from around the country and Canada.

"In the American clay world, the vast majority of work that is produced and exhibited is high-fire ceramics," Cummings explains. "With this exhibit, I'm showcasing work that is being done with low-fire earthenware. The impetus for the show is that I'm really interested to see what clay artists are doing outside of the predominant 'high-fire culture'."

Cummings' curiosity has brought together an eclectic mix of functional work. Working collaboratively, Carol and Richard Selfridge utilize the Italian tradition of majolica-- brightly colored glazes-in their pieces. Ayumi Horie obtains whimsical effects with her bowls' scraffito animals, while Barbara Humpage experiments with a variety of surface treatments, including decals. There are also Pete Pinnell and Lisa Buck, who address the earthenware more directly with their "raw" ceramic vessels.
